St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church
The History of St.Paul
Our historical and spiritual journey as a local congregation of baptized believers in Christ Jesus, began in February 1961, when a group of Baptist ministers and a few dedicated Christian workers met at 891 Mayson Turner Avenue,
the former site of Union Baptist Church, for the purpose of organizing a Baptist church. At the time of its inception, the following ministers were present: The Reverends: L.M. Terrell, H.M. Alexander, J.J. Broadnax, Frank Jones, J.I. McCrary, W.M. McCall and D.P. George.
The newly organized congregation, was given the name Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, and the Reverend Carl H. Moncrieff Sr. was elected to serve as its first pastor. Under his dynamic leadership, the church purchased pews and property and experienced both numerical and spiritual growth. At the time of his resignation in June of 1965,
the Reverend G.J. Lawrence succeeded him as the church's second pastor. Under Reverend Lawrence's leadership, the church acquired another building for worship at 2509 Bellview Drive, N.W., Atlanta, Georgia. Reverend Lawrence served as pastor until February of 1966. Saint Paul is tremendously blessed to have had both Reverend Moncrieff and Reverend Lawrence to serve as the pioneer pastors who paved the way and set the pace for Saint Paul's continued growth and progress.
In March of 1966, a young, energetic sophomore student at Morehouse College, who hailed from Houston, Texas, the Reverend Clayton Eugene Taylor Sr., was called to serve as Saint Paul's third pastor. Under his dynamic leadership, new life and spirit were injected into the spiritual veins of the congregation, the worship service was greatly enriched, new ministries were added, and the attendance and financial giving were greatly increased as result of his dynamic teaching and preaching, and through the enablement of God's grace and power. Because the church experienced such tremendous growth during this period, the Bellview site was no longer adequate to accommodate the growing needs of the congregation. Reverend Taylor, being a man of vision, ambition and determination, envisioned even greater things for the small, but thriving congregation, so acting under the divine orders of the Holy Spirit, he led
the congregation into acquiring a larger building for worship and ministry.
On the first Sunday in April of 1971, after much prayer, many challenges and opposition, Saint Paul moved from its location on Bellview Drive to its new location at 705 Ashby St.NW., the former site of the old Bellwood Baptist Church. God enabled Saint Paul to relinquish its indebtedness on the Bellview property several years ahead of
time, and on December 1,1985, the mortgage burning ceremony brought great joy to the pastor and church family.
It is noteworthy to mention, that Saint Paul's historical and spiritual journey did not end at the Ashby Street location.
For the pastor and congregation saw a further need to expand its ministry and enlarge its territory, and so Saint Paul was blessed to acquire a more updated and enlarged facility at 2870 Headland Drive, in East Point, Georgia, which is the former site of the Headland Heights Baptist Church. As a part of its rich history, Saint Paul is grateful
to include, the late Dr. L.Don. Duvall, Executive Director of the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, the Reverend Dr. Ken Dobbs, his Associate, and Deacon Mark Kimsey of the Headland Heights Baptist church for being instrumental in helping to acquire both the properties on Ashby Street and on Headland Drive.
Since its Genesis in 1961, Saint Paul has remained on the cutting edge of ministry. Many lives have been changed, many souls have been saved, the hungry have been fed, the naked have been clothed, the down-trodden have
been lifted, the disinherited have received love, acceptance and a sense of belong, the unadulterated gospel has
been preached in season and out of season, and many have received Christ Jesus, as their Lord, Master,
and Savior. Although Saint Paul has changed several locations throughout its 61-year history, it has not changed
its core values. It continues to be Christ-centered, family -oriented, community-based and a loving and
nurturing community of believers who seek to carry out the Great Commission of of our Lord, as outlined
in Matthew 28:19-20.
Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church is affiliated with the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Inc. and the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.
